As our group work goes so far, we have deeply understand the situation between China and some other Asia nations. Our group covered the sea territory problems between China and some other countries, this include China, Japan, Vietnam and Philippine. Through our first blog post, we mainly focused on two territorial disputes, China and Japan in East China Sea, China and Vietnam in South China Sea. The first involved the China and Japan over Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands. The contentious islands was under the US government’s occupation after World War 2, and it has been returned to Japan in 1972 while the oil has been found in the dispute islands. In the same year, China begins to declare the ownership of the islands. The issue raised in 2012 after Japanese government bought three islands from private owners. The situation between China and Vietnam was similar, after a naval clash in January 19, 1974, Paracels occupied by South Vietnamese forces(backed by the United States). And Beijing claimed the sovereignty of Spratlys islands. The issue raised recently after the fishing problem between Chinese and Vietnamese; a fishing role has been made by China that foreign fishing ships required to obtain approval to enter those waters. However, the dispute between China and Japan has attracted a great attention in the global politics, which is still appearing in global news. So we focused more about the dispute between China and Japan after the first blog post. Since then, we have discussed the nationalism of these two countries, the involvement of US government, and the dangerous turn of a new war, as well as the history cause of today’s situation in Asia.
After our first group meeting, we determined what are we going to discuss and post. I have looked into the news of Chinese version, it given our group an opportunity to know what we haven’t seen in global news. Also, I have shared some of my understanding of historical cause which others were not familiar with. I did my researches of what I have already knew a bit about it. Along with the information that I have already knew, I looked into them and tried to find what we could use for our post. Everyone in our group has did what they were good at. We created a google doc that everyone could write something, add something and share some links. Some have shared their best opinion; some have showed their best writing. As a group, our several meetings made things easier. That worked better on our topic, not just one’s independent opinion. I think that the group work influenced my approach by everyone could share more information as we could. Through our discussion, we could make the agreement of what was the best information to post.
There are several things that I have learned from this project. Firstly, the topic is a hot issue in global news, which is really worthy to discover it deeply. As a Chinese national, doing this project broadened my horizons, because I could learn what others really think about the disputes between China and other nations. Secondly, through the research that I could always found some interesting articles, it was good to know many opinions in the worldwide. The more information I found that I could understand the issue more. Then, I think working in a group is the best way to discuss a politic issue. The politics are always complicated, people always take side on politic issues. So I think that working with a group is the best way to standing the neutral point of view to see a politic issue, and that could also learn how to accept other opinions. Overall, doing this project was a great opportunity to discover a politic issue and learn from it. At the same time that I have learned how to communicate with others to finish a project.
