Final Post: Catalyst for Change

Throughout the semester our group looked in detail at the New Delhi gang rape case that occurred in 2012. We first looked at India’s history of colonialism and how this has affected its current situation. We also looked at the historical evolution of religion and the caste system that have greatly influenced the gender divide and the inferiority of women. After looking at the country’s history, we looked at its current situation, legal system, and progress. The 2012 gang rape case has had a massive affect on the general population and has given rise to many public movements protesting India’s current legal policies that regard both rape and women. This tragic and horrific event has pushed people forward into action for social and legal change.

While researching for our blog we drew on a number of different sources. A very helpful source was the media that had countless reports of the event in 2012 that appeared around the world. The media also had a lot of good pictures that perfectly captured public emotion and opinion in India after the event. Another source used was the library database that had scholarly articles and journals about the history of rape in India that were reliable and factual sources. The database didn’t have a lot of sources on the actual event but rather were beneficial in creating a platform of information to build off and showcase a timeline. Working as a group we wanted to showcase a variety of sources so we were in close communication about who would use which resources.

While doing this project there were a series of challenges we overcame as a group and also myself as an individual. As a group it was extremely difficult to find a time to meet that would work for all of us. Working with five different people’s schedules can become chaotic which required a lot of pre planning and communication. Individually, I found it challenging not to overlap my information with other members of the group. It was difficult to make it a cohesive post that flowed from paragraph to paragraph while also keeping your own individual voice. Having been involved in this project I’ve now started paying more attention to a variety of news sources rather than favoring one. Also, any article titles that specifically relate to India I now tend to read more in depth and have a better platform of information to base the report on.
